FURNITURE MAKING III – 5 Days
Dovetailing - Make a Drawer or Box
General Course Content
Ideally, students for this course will have attended the 'Furniture Making Part I' course or the weekend sharpening & tuning course, and will bring with them a well set up, basic cabinet-making tool kit, as there will not be any time set aside for preparing tools. This course can also be used to complete the table project by making and fitting the drawer.
This course focuses on the principles and hand techniques used to produce the components for a dovetailed drawer, or box, to a very high tolerance.
Subjects Covered
The main elements covered will include:
- Setting out and planing the component parts to a very fine tolerance
- Accurate hand sawing using traditional back-saws and Japanese pull-saws
- Marking out and cutting through and lapped dovetails
- Hand cutting grooves and beads
- Fitting a lock, and making and fitting a flush escutcheon
- Fitting a drawer to achieve a ‘perfect’ fit
- Fitting the lid of the box, cutting in hinges
- Veneering the drawer front or box top
NOTE: An additional allowance should be made of no more than £20 for materials on this course.
